Secure Mobile Browser
The Challenge
Mobile devices are the most promising way to reach the masses and assure brand loyalty with the existing customer base, primarily because of their ability to provide services anytime, anywhere, have high rate of penetration and potential to grow exponentially.
Our client, a European Bank has always been exploring the latest trends in the banking industry for more efficient working, quality services and satisfied customers. Therefore, having research the trends, the following data was found to be very useful.
A 2007 study by financial consultants suggests that 35% of online banking institutions will adopt mobile banking by 2010 – a change from merely 1% at the time when the survey was made. More than 70% of all financial transactions will come from mobile devices.
In the highly developed European countries where mobile phone penetration is very high the mobile banking is likely to appeal even more than the usage of traditional browsers.
So a custom made mobile banking model was needed in order to satisfy this expanding need of the customers and at the same time to be a step ahead of the competition.
The Solution
The basic concept is a secure mobile browser that allows the user to have access to their bank account at any time through their mobile phone.
By using the built in security protocols, Axeltra‘s Secure Mobile Browser can be used for expanding the presence of the existing software application on mobile phones and other types of handheld devices by eliminating the risks associated with accessing financial networks. Issues concerning theft, loss, unauthorized access and the encryption of the data on a limited processing power and operating system environments such as mobile phones are addressed by the implementation of additional layers of security and by providing a set of tools that allow the internet banking providers to seamlessly adopt their services for mobile banking.
The mobile browser has widespread functionalities that can be further advanced. Some of the current features include:
- Account Balance
- Statements on the account history
- Domestic fund transfers
- General information such as weather updates, news
- Targeted Loyalty-related offers
- Location-based services
- Selection of a preferred Language
- Most used transactions (the selected ones will be stored in the start menu)
- Beneficiary list
- Alerts
The Secure Mobile Browser is based on Java ME and runs on MIDP 2.0. Aside from being able to work on the latest mobile phones it can also comply with the very limited ones without overloading their processing power.
The data inside the mobile client is encrypted with additional security layers and the responding server accepts calls after certain activities are performed on client and server side.
Server software features
- Administration Console – contains log error browser, user statistics etc.
- Content Management System – used for publishing information to the mobile banking users through the Secure Mobile Browser.
- Statistical Reports – how many people are using what application features and in which time
- SXML Processor - Converts XML returned by EIK Bank by using the XSLT language.
- Forms – the forms for performing standard transactions: money transfers, account history with date selector, balance enquiry, beneficiary list, settings etc. used through the Secure Mobile Browser.
- Start Menu – Content Displayed when the user starts the Secure Mobile Browser
The interface
This interface example is optimized for smart phones with larger screen resolutions. It can also be used for mobile devices with touch-screen functionality.
